AcQumen Medical: Transforming Pediatric Care Through Innovation

At the heart of AcQumen Medical lies a mission to revolutionize care for the most vulnerable patients: neonates and children in intensive care units. Co-founder and CEO Dori Jones shares the story of their journey, the focus on pediatric patients, and the groundbreaking technology they’re developing.

Q1: What inspired you to start AcQumen Medical with your co-founders?

"I've been working on heart devices for 18 years, with roles in engineering, marketing, and strategic planning. A decade of supporting technologies in the operating room and ICU exposed me to the challenges of caring for critically ill patients. When the concept of improving hemodynamic monitoring arose with some past colleagues, I knew it was an opportunity to make a difference."

Q2: Why the focus on pediatrics and neonatal care?

"Focusing on pediatrics was natural for me. I’ve worked with pediatric devices and witnessed the gaps in this space. Few companies design technologies specifically for children and babies; clinicians often adapt adult devices, which isn’t ideal. At AcQumen, we aim to address this need. I’m also the mom of a NICU patient, so this mission is personal."

Q3: What problem is AcQumen Medical solving, and why is it important?

"Neonatal and pediatric ICU patients face unique challenges that cost the US healthcare system billions annually. Yet tools in the ICU are limited—clinicians rely heavily on blood pressure and heart rate, which are late indicators of problems. AcQumen Medical's UltraTrac system offers continuous, noninvasive monitoring of cardiac output, enabling earlier intervention and more individualized care. Precision medicine means better outcomes for patients, clinicians, and hospitals alike."

Q4: Can you share the story behind the UltraTrac system?

"Our team combines expertise in hemodynamic monitoring and ultrasound technology. The concept originated with my colleague David Lerner, a seasoned medical innovator. We acquired a bioimpedance device that measures hemodynamics—a functional monitoring tool that was once FDA approved and used in hospitals. Now, we’re enhancing it with a customized ultrasound sensor to improve accuracy and reliability. While the solution seems obvious to us, combining these two techniques into one system has never been done before."

Q5: Where did the name AcQumen come from?

"I work with a stellar team, each bringing strong business, clinical, and technical acumen to the table. The Q is a nod to the hemodynamic monitoring device we acquired and symbolizes 'flow' in math and physics. Yes, I’m still an engineering nerd at heart."

Q6: What motivates you?

"In developing the UltraTrac system, I’ve interviewed many doctors and nurses to ensure we’re solving real problems. Their enthusiasm has been overwhelming. A neonatologist called the idea a 'game-changer,' and a pediatric intensivist said half of her current ICU patients could benefit from UltraTrac. Learning the statistics and hearing clinicians’ perspectives have solidified our mission to improve pediatric care. The US has alarming rates of infant mortality compared to other developed nations—it’s time for a change."
